House History
We are located in a circa 1884 brownstone row house of the Neo-Grec style, typical of the period having just past its 125th birthday. The home is rare in that it contains the original layout from it's Victorian design and has many of the fine details including fireplaces, carved stone mantles, wooden trim work and soaring 13' ceilings. The house was originally designed as a single family home for the well heeled New Yorkers who could commute downtown on the new elevated stream trains. The house was designed with two entrances, the main entrance up the stoop for the family who resided there. The other entrance is under the stoop for the servants who worked there, hence he term upstairs downstairs.
The house was originally lit with gas lighting as there was no electricity service at that time. Transportation would have been horse and carriage or horse drawn street car.
Like many Harlem Brownstones, this single family home was converted into a rooming house in the early 1900’s and was operated as a single room occupancy (SRO) building and provided ten or more individual living quarters. During that time the house details were thankfully preserved under layers of paint for later discovery.
It has since been restored back to a single family home and retains the original layout and details from its elegant Victorian past.
